Best Breed for the Elderly
Dogs are an often known and coined as man's best friend, as they keep you company and in return only ask for respect, love, and dedication. No matter what age you may be, or how many people are in your family, dogs are a great companion and there is a perfect type of breed for all living scenarios.
Often times elderly individuals wish to purchase a dog, however, are sometimes turned off by the idea as they believe that dogs are too much work. However, that is not entirely true, when purchasing a new dog it is important to consider two things as being an elderly dog owner which are the size of the dog, and the overall temperament of the breed. As smaller dogs tend to be easier to handle in comparison to larger ones, they also can be put on laps and provide comfort, warmth, and love. Generally, when considering the best breed for the elderly, the personality and temperance of the dog goes quite a long way as well. A dog that thrives on companionship, loyalty, and is full of intelligence and discipline are often times sought of as the most desirable quality traits.
Some of the various breeds we recommend to elderly owners when considering purchasing a new dog are Pomeranians, Shih Tzu's, Chihuahuas, and Schnauzers. Even though there are other breeds of dogs that also fit into the size and temperance outline for the elderly, above are some of our personal favorites. As Pomeranians are often times seen as small yet potent miniature bears, Pomeranians are loyal and loving by nature, and love to be the focal point of their owner's undivided attention.
Shih Tzu's, are often times a bold pick for a dog breed, as they are alert, curious, yet gentle with the way they choose to interact; overall making them a very playful yet calming dog to have around. Chihuahuas are great for all ages, but are especially great for elderly dog owners. As Chihuahuas have a very alert sense to them, they often times can be great alert dogs for when something is going on. They are well-known for their keen sense to detect people as well as situations that may be uncommon. Lastly and certainly not least is the Schnauzer, its prominent and proud facial features mixed with its loving and gentle emotions often times make them the best breed for the elderly. They thrive on pleasing their owner and in return receiving love and recognition for their companionship.
