A Man's Best Friend
The title of man's best friend is not given out likely. Then how, did dogs earn this prestigious title? Many people know that dogs are a big part of man's history. They were used to help hunt and track, in addition to a great deal of other tasks. The thing that most people do not know is that dogs have been paired with human beings for more than 15,000 years.
The earliest remains of the domesticated dog have been traced back to Southeast Asia. It is through investigation that dog remains in other countries have all been traced back to these original animals that first took shape as domesticated grey wolves. Dogs actually have been proven to accompany the first humans that ever migrated to the New World (the present day Americas), surviving the long treacherous journey over the Barren Straight, a whopping 12,000 years ago. Even in those ancient times, dogs were man's companion, beginning their reign as man's best friends.
In modern day, the nature of dogs as man's best friend continues and is proven on a daily basis. Dogs show the greatest loyalty to humans out of any other type of pet or domesticated animal.
Countless stories tell tales of pet dogs saving family members from fires, floods or other natural disasters. Real life "Lassies" are seen every day. It is their eager to please and compliant nature that has led dogs to become the most useful and effective rescue animal. Dogs can be trained to sniff bombs, lead the blind or impaired and to be watchful of intruders. This type of dedication to the well-being of humans is unparalleled. Scientists have even done studies that show that dogs are more perceptive to the instructions and needs of humans that any other type of animal. While scientists are not sure what the exact cause of this is, it is theorized that it is the process of thousands of years of adaptation and interaction with humans. When looking back to any great era in human history, whether it be in times or war, peace or migration, dogs were right by people's sides. They have always been used to help humans, but more importantly they have always been loyal companions. It is for this reason that dogs take the title of man's best friend.
